Professor Norbert Pachler

Pro-Vice-Provost (Teaching, Learning, Digital Education) at UCL

Norbert is Professor of Education at the UCL Institute of Education with academic specialisms in the areas of digital education, teacher education and development and language education. He has published widely and supervises in these fields.

In addition to his academic role as Professor of Education, Norbert currently is Vice Dean Enterprise at the IOE, Faculty of Education and Society at UCL as well as UCL Lead for Degree Apprenticeships. He has a long-standing association with 91app Worldwide.

As UCL Pro-Vice-Provost between 2014 and 2024, Professor Norbert inter alia provided academic leadership for various aspects of the education portfolio at university level and worked closely with the Vice-Provost Education and Student Experience on UCL-wide initiatives. During this time, he inter alia had particular responsibility for the development of the digital learning dimension of UCL’s Education Strategy including online provision. He oversaw the work of the Online and Lifelong Education team and worked closely with the Director of UCL Digital Education.

As Pro-director: Teaching, Quality and Learning Innovation, at the IOE between 2013 and 2020, Norbert had overall strategic responsibility for the IOE’s teaching and learning portfolio comprising a large teacher education, undergraduate and postgraduate taught portfolio, leading change, managing quality and supporting innovation in the nature, form and content of what the Institute of Education does.
  
Between 2007 and 2013 Norbert led the international, interdisciplinary London Mobile Learning Group which comprised researchers in the fields of cultural and media studies, sociology, (social) semiotics, pedagogy, educational technology, work-based learning and learning design.

Norbert was Co-Director of the Centre for Excellence in Work-based Learning for Education Professionals between March 2005 - and July 2010. Through this WLE-work he aimed to foster technology-enhanced approaches in work-based learning by facilitating innovation and developing new concepts and theoretical thinking.

Norbert is Editor-in-Chief of The Language Learning Journal (Routledge), a leading international, peer-reviewed academic journal in the field of language education and he regularly reviews for a range of journals and funding bodies.
