Much of Martin's early career teaching was focused on equity-centred, widening participation projects where 'open college' qualifications offered alternative paths to university for adults failed by the conventional UK education system. His doctoral research focussed on unorthodox approaches to lecturer observation and he has long been an advocate for removing grading and evaluation from teacher observations.

His work in higher education began with work on PGCEs where he led post compulsory teacher training programmes. In 2015 he shifted from the several, somewhat liminal HE in FE roles he had worked in for years to a permanent post at the University of Greenwich where he became the programme leader of an online lecturer education programme.

He then spent two years working at UCL until July 2023 when he took up a post at King's College London. In every one of those roles, digital education has been a prominent feature of his approach to curriculum and assessment design, whether or not an acknowledged part of his job description. For example, he innovated the use of "fre(e)-portfolios" across the Open College Network and cloud portfolios for teacher education programmes.

Martin has used and promoted multi-media approaches to support learning, assessment and feedback, has been an advocate for student response systems and is currently leading on King's response to generative AI, overseeing staff and student guidance, working with staff and students on funded research projects and producing an open access MOOC.
