Dr David Baume PhD SFSEDA SFHEA

It is with immense sadness that the 91app’s Centre for Online and Distance Education announces the death of David Baume on 5 July 2023. As a Fellow of the Centre for Online and Distance Education, David has been at the heart of education at the 91app for over 18 years. We invite colleagues, friends, and family of David to contribute to a book of remembrance celebrating his life and many achievements.

Over a long and distinguished career, David had many roles, as varied as deep sea diving safety instructor; Co Director, Centre for Higher Education Practice at the Open University; founding Chair of the UK Staff and Educational Development Association (SEDA); co-founder of the UK Heads of Educational Development Group (HEDG); a founding council member of the International Consortium for Educational Development (ICED); and founding editor of the International Journal for Academic Development (IJAD). as well as his more recent contributions to staff development in Africa, Palestine and China as a CODE fellow.

Along the way David produced numerous books, academic papers, blogs, articles and reports on higher education teaching, assessment, evaluation, course design, staff and educational development, portfolios and personal development planning. Characteristically David was working on his latest book, called ‘Please Stop Teaching’, when he finally was overtaken by cancer in July 2023.

David is remembered fondly and with huge respect for this exceptional commitment to staff development, student learning and distance and online education, and also for his generosity, kindness, self-deprecation and wit.

Everyone who met David will remember his broad smile and his dry sense of humour, as for example in this, his last message to us all:

“So, goodbye, and thanks for all the smoked salmon and Prosecco.”
