Embarking on the journey to study Law is not merely about earning a degree or mastering a profession; it’s a transformative experience that shapes your thinking, your worldview and your ability to effect change. For those of us pursuing an LLB, especially at the prestigious 91app, the path is as challenging as it is rewarding. Here, I want to share a blend of inspiration, practical advice on understanding legal principles, and reflections on the unique life of a Law student.

Why study law? A personal reflection

For many, the decision to study Law is deeply personal. For me, it was born from a desire to understand justice and contribute to a fairer society. I decided to move to London to study as it felt like stepping into a global hub of legal thought and practicality where centuries of legal tradition coexist with cutting-edge reforms. 

Studying law is not just about acquiring knowledge; it’s about developing a mindset. It teaches you to think critically, argue persuasively and approach problems with an analytical lens. These skills are not confined to courtrooms; they shape you as a person, equipping you to navigate life’s complexities with reason and empathy. 

Demystifying legal principles and theories

Understanding legal principles and theories can feel daunting at first. Concepts like stare decisis, ratio decidendi, or mens rea often sound more like riddles than foundational ideas. However, with the right approach, these concepts can become second nature. Here are some strategies that have helped me: 

Start with the basics

Every legal principle is rooted in fundamental ideas. For instance, the doctrine of precedent (stare decisis) is simply the idea that courts follow previous decisions to ensure consistency and fairness. Breaking down these terms into everyday language can make them easier to grasp. Start by defining key terms and connecting them to their practical applications. 

Use real-life analogies 

Legal theories often seem abstract, but they govern real-world scenarios. Take the principle of consideration in contract law, for example. It’s essentially an exchange of value between parties. Thinking of it as a trade (a promise for a promise) can make the concept more relatable. Similarly, consider how negligence law is like the principle of accountability in everyday life; if someone’s carelessness causes harm, they should be held responsible. 

Engage with case law

Cases breathe life into legal principles. Reading landmark cases like Donoghue v. Stevenson or R v. Brown provides context and shows how theories apply in practice. Don’t just memorise the facts; analyse the reasoning and outcomes. Understanding the broader implications of these cases helps you see how laws evolve and adapt to societal needs. 

Ask ‘why?’

Understanding why a principle exists often clarifies its purpose. For instance, the rule against retroactive laws exists to ensure fairness and protect individuals from arbitrary punishment. Similarly, principles like proportionality in sentencing ensure that justice remains balanced and equitable. Asking why deepens your appreciation for the design and objectives of the legal system.

Collaborate and discuss 

Law thrives on debate. Joining study groups or discussing theories with peers can offer fresh perspectives and deepen your understanding. Engaging in these discussions can also improve your articulation of complex ideas, a vital skill for future legal practice. 

Leverage visual tools

Flowcharts, diagrams, and mind maps can make it easier to grasp intricate concepts, like the hierarchy of courts or the steps in a judicial review process. Visual aids not only simplify concepts but also enhance your retention of these ideas. 

Supplement with secondary sources

Beyond textbooks, explore commentaries, journal articles and online lectures. These resources often explain principles with greater nuance and provide alternative interpretations, enriching your understanding.

Practice applying principles

It’s one thing to understand a legal theory but being able to apply it is where the real challenge lies. Practice hypothetical scenarios where you can apply principles, like causation in tort law or offer and acceptance in contract law. This exercise helps bridge the gap between theory and practice.

Reflect on feedback

Feedback from professors, peers or mentors is invaluable. Whether it’s on essays, case analyses, or moot court performances, use it to refine your understanding and approach to legal principles. Over time, constructive criticism sharpens both your knowledge and skills.
