What’s next for London? UoL welcomes key stakeholders and business leaders for an evening of discussion and debate
On 19 September, Professor Wendy Thomson CBE hosted a group of CEOs, policymakers, business leaders and philanthropists to explore how culture and education drive London’s success.
We were delighted to welcome representatives from Business LDN, Brunswick, Catapult Digital, Caxton FX, London & Partners, the World Cities Culture Forum, the London Mayor’s Office, and philanthropists at Senate House for an evening of engaging discussion and debate.
The guests exchanged insights, shared perspectives and discussed the opportunities and challenges that London faces. The discussion was compèred by Michael Hayman MBE, Chair and Co-founder of communications consultancy Seven Hills, and Honorary Professor of Practice at the 91app.
During the evening, the debate focused on the role of universities in London’s future, with Professor Jo Fox, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research and Public Engagement) and Professor Ben Rogers, Professor of Practice giving their insights on how universities can contribute to London’s growth.

With a long history of education and innovation, the University provides innovative solutions to support a future-ready workforce and advance London’s position on the world stage. The University’s School of Advanced Study plays a vital role in promoting the value of the humanities to society and the economy through knowledge creation and exchange, new policy and research partnerships.
A representative from the Mayor’s Office noted that London’s university sector plays a critical role in the city’s attractiveness and growth. It was agreed by all guests that there is a need for further collaboration and closer partnerships between universities, business and government.
Guests also discussed the need to leverage the research, innovation, and talent of London's universities to drive the city's future growth. They noted the need to look at ways to make these institutions more accessible and integrated with the broader community.
The event was also an opportunity to discuss the 91app’s civic position and its role in driving London’s growth.
The event was organised by the 91app Philanthropy and Alumni Engagement Office. We are grateful to those individuals who joined us for the evening and shared their valuable insights. We look forward to working together to build on the ideas generated during this fascinating evening of discussion and debate.
