Established in 1970, the Psychology Library is rich in historically significant journals, psychological tests, and foundational texts that chronicle the evolution of psychology as a discipline.

The collection emphasises the social, cultural, and political dimensions of psychology, and is highly interdisciplinary in nature. While it is predominantly in English, its geographic focus has traditionally been Anglo-American and Western European; however, growing attention is being given to research from outside these regions, including the study of liberation psychology in Latin America, as well as African and Indigenous psychologies.

A key strength of the collection lies in the history and philosophy of psychology, with extensive materials exploring the development of psychological thought and the history of emotions. The collection strives to provide a comprehensive bibliography for researchers, with holdings in both English and major European languages. Significant resources in psychoanalysis further support cross-disciplinary research, while feminist psychology, environmental and conservation psychology, and political psychology are core areas of focus, linking psychology to philosophy, history, and the social sciences.

The collection also offers notable holdings in parapsychology, with special collections such as the Harry Price Library of Magical Literature, the Eric Dingwall Papers, and the Robert Saudeck Papers, making it a unique resource for those studying the intersection of psychology and mysticism.

In response to emerging trends, the library is incorporating the growing application of digital humanities methods within psychology, particularly in text analysis for personality recognition. This innovative approach allows for the extraction of valuable insights into social processes, individual differences, and mental health through the analysis of written and spoken language.

While the library selectively acquires materials in neuroscience, cognitive science, psychiatry, clinical psychology, psychotherapy, child psychology, educational psychology, occupational psychology, forensic psychology, and mental health, the focus remains on historical perspectives or resources that complement other subject collections. Textbooks aimed at undergraduates are excluded from the collection.

The library’s holdings span all major formats, including printed and electronic monographs and journals, along with ephemeral publications, reports, and conference proceedings. In addition, the library subscribes to leading psychology databases, ensuring comprehensive access to all areas of psychological research and enhancing the depth and scope of its already exceptional collections.
