Collection Description

Senate House Library’s Music Collections support the study of music from the early modern period to the present, with strengths in European and American traditions, and holdings in ethnomusicology, film, popular, and performance music.

The collection includes printed and manuscript scores, recordings, concert programmes, and a broad range of books and periodicals. Highlights include over 1,000 facsimiles and first editions, extensive collected score editions, and significant foreign-language holdings.

Special collections include the George Collection of piano music, the Plainsong and Medieval Music Society Library, and the Tudor Church Music Collection. Together, these resources make the Library a vital centre for historical and contemporary music research.

Locating and accessing material

The best way to start finding history resources at Senate House Library is to use the catalogue.

The music collections are located on the 4th floor. New acquisitions for the collections are shelved in the Periodicals Room on the 4th floor. Books and journals held in the stacks and off-site can be requested through the fetch service on the catalogue.
