Collection Description

Senate House Library is home to one of the UK’s leading collections for the study of Germanic languages and cultures. Broad in scope, the collection supports research across the full spectrum of Germanic-speaking regions, with particular emphasis on Western Germanic languages such as German, Dutch, and Yiddish.

Resources include medieval texts, canonical authors, contemporary literature, and historical-critical editions, as well as an extensive range of secondary criticism and theoretical works.

The Germanic collections are especially valuable for interdisciplinary research, offering rich materials for scholars of philosophy, history, gender studies, exile studies, and visual culture.
